Essential Oils

We love essential oils over here & we use them daily. From skincare needs to sleep & emotional support, there's an oil for that. I wanted to write a post to describe a few ways of how we use them. They have changed so much about how we do things in our everyday & it's definitely for the better.

I didn't really know a lot about essential oils at first but I kept seeing EO posts showing up on Instagram over the years. I saw how they had helped people with eczema or were being used in cooking recipes. Nothing really spoke to me until I was visiting a close girlfriend of mine and she told me about how she ditched all of her department store moisturizers & face creams and was using essential oils instead. Clearly I was intrigued. She explained that she was no longer buying lotions/moisturizers/etc. She had a skincare roller recipe she was using and nothing else. Not to mention her skin looked great! I was shocked. No more face lotion? Natural blemish control exists? How does this even work? I don't get it.

So fast forward a year and a half later, and we use Young Living Essential Oils every single day. I dragged my feet for a long time and I felt cautious because I stepped into a world that was unfamiliar. I took my time, read my resources, and asked my oily friends allllllllll of the questions. Now that I have a really good understanding of how it all works, I chuckle at myself for taking so long to jump into the oily world! The resources + community that I have with Young Living is simply amazing.

Some ways we use essential oils:

Skincare: A few drops each of Frankincense + Lavender with a few drops of carrier oil (I prefer Jojoba Oil), is applied to my face every morning. I drop the oils into my hands and apply directly to my face. That's it! Jojoba oil keeps my skin hydrated all day. No dryness and very little oiliness (my skin used to be SO shiny). And these specific oils are anti-aging, help even out your skin tone and they smell amazing. Not to mention they are all-natural. No fillers. Just oils. (Young Living essential oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade oils.) I no longer use moisturizers from the store or expensive eye creams (which of course have a ton of chemicals and aren't good for you).

Sleep: I have all sorts of recipes for a good night's rest or a relaxing nap. My absolute favorite is a blend of Frankincense + Lavender + Orange. When I diffuse this combination we all sleep soundly & peacefully. A roller can be made with these oils as well and you can apply them directly to the bottoms of your feet, spine and wrists. (I dilute with a carrier oil.) And we use these oils on ourselves and our kids! Layla loves the scent of this combination and she helps fill her little diffuser every night. It's pretty cute.

Laundry: Did you know that dryer sheets are absolutely toxic? Sure, they make your laundry smell nice and feel soft, but they are actually laced with hormone-disrupting chemicals and carcinogens. Our skin is our biggest organ and here we are drying our clothes with these sheets that can cause skin irritations, respiratory problems, migraines etc. Take a second and Google it. I promise you, you will want to ditch them ASAP. So what do we use instead? Well, we use wool dryer balls and we add essential oils to them for scent. Smells amazing and no fake fragrances being used. And wool dryer balls cuts down drying time. You can also opt to add a little bit of vinegar to the washing machine to help soften your clothes. Dealing with static from the dryer? Add a ball of aluminum foil or dry your clothes at a lower temperature.

Cleaning: You can use Lemon essential oil to remove stickers instead of the dreaded Windex and Goof Off or Goo Gone (all filled with yucky chemicals). Young Living also offers an entire line called Thieves with natural cleaners and plant-based laundry detergent that's safe to use.

Air Fresheners/candles: If you haven't already heard, burning candles is actually toxic. Take a couple of minutes to Google why and come right back to learn the best alternative option. Hint: essential oil diffuser blend recipes & DIY room sprays. Just sayin'. ;) There are so many EO blend combos for every season, holiday, mood, etc. I share a ton of these on my Instagram account: @theoildroplounge. Need a recipe to feel more awake in the early mornings? How about a recipe for calm feelings + happy moods? We've got you covered.

Immunity & Wellness: To help boost my kids' wellness, I use a blend of Thieves + Frankincense + Lemon to help keep their immune systems working how they should. Essential oils help support your body systems and keep you above the wellness line. Think of it as preventive care like supplements and vitamins. These things don't cure you but they help support the way your body is suppose to work.

Children: Teething, tantrums, restful sleep, calm feelings, natural hair detangler, monster-be-gone spray, wellness, etc. Just. So. Many. Things.

Emotional Health: I'm a SAHM who works part-time from home through VIPKID. Being a mom/wife/teacher/ and running our household, can get a tad stressful at times. I'm good at what I do but even on the best days, I can still feel run down, stressed, discouraged, defeated, etc. Diffusing essential oils has helped to calm me down, clear my mind & focus. Of all the things that I love the most about oils, the emotional balance I feel from using them has been a game changer.

If you are interested in getting started with oils, you can learn more about the Young Living Premium Starter Kit HERE and how to order it. Honestly, this is the best way to get started. Each oil that comes in the kit has versatile uses. For example, I mentioned that lemon can be used to clean but did you know that you can also diffuse it to uplift moods & increase energy? Additionally, it can be added to a rollerball to help with immune system support. You can even add a drop or two to your water for a refreshing taste!!

You can also follow my EO account on Instagram, @theoildroplounge, where I share information about oils and my favorite diffuser & roller ball recipes. So many fun things, folks!

I hope you'll join me to learn more and begin to love oils as much as we do.

Hi sweet friends! Today I'd like to share some information about my teaching position with VIPKID. I've been working for the company for over a year and I love my job. I get a lot of questions about what I do so I felt it was time to dedicate a post to it. It's a wonderful opportunity for the right person and it's a great way to earn supplemental income for yourself and/or your family (without having to leave your house!). Forbes also listed VIPKID as #1 on their list of companies who offer remote jobs!

What do you teach? I teach English as a second language to school-aged children from the comfort of my home. Everything is online.

Where are the students? Who are they? The students are located in Beijing, China. They are Chinese students learning English as a second language.

What kind of media platform do you use to teach the lessons? Can the students see you? VIPKID has its own student/teacher portal. I simply log in, upload the provided powerpoint, wait for my student to arrive, and teach via video. It's similar to Facetime or Skype.

How many students do you teach at once? The classes are 1:1.

How long are the classes? Each class is 25 mins long.

Is there a lot of prep involved? No. The curriculum is provided and I tend to review the lessons the night before. I like to spend 5-10 minutes reviewing slides.

What is the pay rate? Pay is determined on your qualifications & interview. Typically, the breakdown ranges from $14-$22/hour including bonuses & incentives.

How often do you get paid? Once a month via direct deposit.

What time do you teach? I like to teach from 5:30am-10am most days of the week, but when I lived out west in Washington, I taught from 5am-7am most mornings. Depending on your time zone, the hours available to teach will vary. Friday & Saturday evenings are also available throughout the year and additional hours are added during summer break (including evening hours on weekdays).

What are the qualifications?
- Bachelor's Degree (any field of study)
- Experience in working with kids
- North American accent

I'm interested but I don't know anything about ESL (English as second language) or ESL techniques. My background is not in teaching. Is there training involved? Yes, there is. The hiring process helps train you for job and I'm here to help you as well!

What equipment do you need?
- A good computer or iPad
- A stable internet connection with back up (ex: mobile hot spot)
- Headphones with mic

What kind of support can I expect once I start teaching? We have a vast community on social media to help support VIPKID teachers. There are many FB groups to use as resources if you have questions, need advice, want to share ideas/teaching tips, etc. Some are even broken down by time zone. Not to mention, you have me to help guide you. ;)

What do you like most about the job? I love the flexibility. Since this is supplemental income for my family, I work around my family's schedule. I prefer to teach before my kids are up/before my husband leaves for work. I take time off when I need to, but I also work more when I'd like to earn more money. This job allows me to get my 'work day' done early so that I can be mom for the rest of the day.

How do I apply? If you'd like to apply, click here. (You may need my referral code which is: 01O849). If you decide to hop around the website, that is totally fine and encouraged. When you decide to go for it, please come back to this specific link. It is tied to my teacher ID which will list you as my personal referral and allow me to guide you through the hiring process. It also gives me credit for sharing about the job, which will be something you too can take advantage of if you choose to refer other teachers. (Referring and/or recruiting is not a requirement.)

If you'd like to know more, please reach out to me! You can get a hold of me on Facebook or Instagram. You can also click the 'contact' link above. I'm happy to share my experiences with you and answer any questions you may have.

Valentine Sprinkle Squares

For every holiday or special event, Matthew makes this sweet little treat. It's a really easy recipe to follow and can be made ahead of time if need be. You only need five main ingredients and you can decorate as you wish! He typically makes it with milk chocolate, but this time I requested white chocolate. Good luck with only eating one of these yummies. ;)

1-2 sleeves of saltine crackers
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 standard bag of chocolate chips (milk/semi-sweet/white/etc.)
Your choice of sprinkles

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F.
Cover a baking sheet with foil and place saltine crackers salt-side down onto baking sheet.
In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 1 cup butter & 1 cup brown sugar. Stir continuously until mixture is boiling. Then stir for three more minutes. Remove from heat and pour mixture onto saltine crackers. Spread evenly.
Put baking sheet into the preheated oven and let it bake for five minutes. Remove from oven and pour chocolate chips evenly over top. Let the chocolate chips melt a little bit before spreading them out.
Once the chocolate has been smoothed out, feel free to decorate with sprinkles!
Once the baking sheet has cooled, stick it in the fridge or freezer for at least an hour so that the dessert hardens. (We like to let it freeze overnight.) When it's ready, break it up into pieces & serve!

I hope you like this recipe as much as we do. It's so tasty and an easy way to get festive. :)

What are some treats that you love to bake for Valentine's Day?
